The Golem of the Crematorium

This series of drawings in a mixed ink technique (40×50 cm) is dedicated to the bravery and memory of the Sonderkommando Revolt in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. On the now infamous date of the 7th of October, the the Sonderkommando unsuccessfully fought the SS officers and tragically perished. In this re-imagined fantastical series, the Sonderkommando not only conspire to revolt against their captors and tormentors, but create the mythical, seemingly indestructible golem to aid them.

From Ashes, Clay and Fire, the Golem is born (The golem is created by the conspirators)

Rise Golem! (Start of the riot)

A desperate fight (The sonderkommando fight the SS guards)

Burn those who would burn regardless (The flame troopers arrive)

In the ashes of the furnace (While the humans burn , the clay and ash golem survives and battles the remaining flame troopers)

Dead standoff (Only the officer and golem remain, with the officer reaching behind his head to reveal a terrible secret)
Truth revealed (The death figure, previously the officer, reveals itself and erases the alef on the golem’s head, changing the Hebrew word for truth to death)
The march of death (The death figure leads all the fallen humans in a macabre march, while the Hebrew letters in the middle spell death)
